
People in contemporary culture don't like to discuss the concept of sin for various reasons. Sin is too upsetting to talk about. People like to believe that they are basically good. And, they love to pick and choose morality that best suits their lifestyle
In an April 2008 episode, a cartoon character in the popular but lewd television show "South Park" crudely slayed the liberal view of sin by saying: "...abortion is the ultimate form of cheating. You are cheating nature itself. Why do rich white girls get ahead in life? Because they get abortions...They cheat that little critter in their belly right out of a chance at life." After viewing the above exchange, a female, "pro-choice" South Park fan was jarred so profoundly that she had to stop watching. She said that it "hurt" to hear it.
Some time ago, I sat next to a man on a plane who assured me he was a good person. When I asked him if he had ever lied, he replied that he had "fibbed." So, he agreed that he was at least a liar. I said I was too. But he also admitted to being a thief. I told him I was guilty as well. So I brought up Jesus' comments on murder (Matt 5:21-22) and adultery (Matt 5:28). We admitted to both. With a grin, I had to comment: "So, you're telling me that you're a lying, thieving, murderous, adulterer? I thought you said you were a good person!" He was stunned at his revealed sin, which gave me an opportunity to share the cure.
